Lancaster County may be known for the simple lives of its inhabitants yet the area is rich in culture and design. Indeed, the intricate patterns of a Scherenschnitte and the highly decorated Pennsylvania Dutch pottery are items many Lancaster visitors are eager to see. So, before you go, here are a few folk art designs to look out for and where to find them.

Pennsylvania German Redware Pottery

Redware pottery was common among the colonies in the 18th century and is still created by Lancaster’s inhabitants today. As the name implies, the pottery is created from red clay. Pennsylvania Dutch folk art uses local Lancaster County clay for two types of redware pottery. The first is basic functional pottery meant for daily use in the kitchen – this includes jugs, plates, bowls and the like. The second type shows off local folk art designs and is meant for decorative purposes. Local artists will create decorative slipware by glazing the pottery and etching designs into the glaze. Designs can include birds, flowers, abstract waves, words, or drawings to commemorate a special occasion.

Paper Arts And Beading Supplies

Paper Arts And Beading Supplies

For today’s column, we’re going to talk about storage options for our scrapbook, paper and beading supplies. If you’re a regular reader of mine, you know I’m always saying, “Go vertical!” And it doesn’t matter if we’re talking about a craft room, kitchen, bedroom or garage; to maximize space you must go vertical.

I love the upright towers for storing scrapbook sheets and stamp pads. If you purchase the plastic variety, there are pros and cons to them. On the plus side, they’re inexpensive and the drawers are usually clear, enabling you to see their contents. On the downside, the drawers are flimsy when partially pulled out. Your other option is to reuse an old upright wooden chest of drawers. You may already have something like this tucked away in your garage or basement–go check it out now! (well, not right at this exact moment)

Anyway, I’ll give you an example. The winner of my 2005 Messiest Sewing Room ContestTM also loves to scrapbook and make her own greeting cards. She had long ago purchased a couple of ugly (but sturdy) narrow wooden chest of drawers at a yard sale and was using them to

The Basic Things You Need to Know About This Paper Art

The art of quilling has been around for centuries and it has indeed become a great form of art involving the use of strips of paper that are coiled and curled using a curling tool and shaped into shapes that will make up a much bigger design or pattern such as flowers.

This paper art was also known as paper filigree and for some others, it was named paper-scrolling. For those who practice the art centuries ago, they use to make use of quills in rolling the strips of paper, thus the name quilling. Tribal Man

Ever since the dawn of man, the art of tattooing has been a part of our society. Once just a tribal symbol of days gone by, tribes such as the Atayal began tattooing their faces as a sign of their worthiness as warriors and women. The marks signified that the men were mighty protectors of their homeland and upon the female face it signified an ability to weave and keep house.

Brotherhood of Arms

In our culture, the tattoo scene took off as the military and navy set sail. Men often marked themselves with their platoon numbers or with a special tattoo of significance as a band of brotherhood. However, these tattoos served another purpose. In a worst case scenario, a fatality or injury could be easily named as a US soldier if he carried “the mark”. This meant if other areas were unrecognizable that the tattoo

Organizing Your Paper Arts

Organizing Your Paper Arts

I wanted to share with you some simple methods to organize your paper arts, scrapbooking and stamping accessories. Let’s start with your stamps: You can either store them horizontally in a drawer, or you can store them vertically in a wall-mounted organizer.

One of my clients arranged her stamps in plastic cutlery trays. To keep her trays from sliding around when she opens or closes the drawer, she uses rubberized lining (sold on the roll by Rubbermaid). Another superb method is to store your stamps in an organized wall-mounted system. By going vertical, you maximize your space.

Try not to stack your stamps because you really want to see the designs at a glance. If this isn’t practical because you have a large assortment, try grouping them by category in your container.

Keep in mind that there is a fine line between being organized and being messy. You can be both but, if you never tidy up your crafting room, it will lead to disorganization. Most of us have more than one crafting hobby and a good organizing method is to compartmentalize. It’s like when we were in kindergarten when everything had a place

The art of adorning ones body with henna tattoos is said to bring good luck. Henna is said to have calming and cooling affects on the nerves. The intricate designs and beautiful art of henna is a fun way to enjoy tattoo art without the life long commitment.

It’s very helpful to have these examples available to look at as you create your henna body art.

1. I prefer using a dark tea to make the paste as it adds to the color

The Endless Possibilities to Get Your Nails Done

The Endless Possibilities to Get Your Nails Done

The nail art designs of today have come a long way from the one color application of the past. Today the sky’s the limit with these accessories that people call fingernails. These can be dazzled up at a salon or even at home. There are plenty of supplies available in stores for home beautification of your own fingernails. They can be designed to match any outfit and for all holidays.

Hand-painted artwork is very simple to do. Most people find they can add flowers to fingernails with little difficulty. The background is best if it is a pale color with the petals on the flower being a much brighter color.

The center can be a lighter shade than the petals and the entire design can be added with the nail polish brush. You may need to have a friend help you out if you can only paint with your dominant hand. Salons will perform this flower creation for you for somewhere between 5 and 10 dollars.

There has been numerous times when you’ve woken up to find the imprint of your sheets in your nails, but now it is fashionable. Many people are adding

Paper Art of the 3D Kind

Paper Art of the 3D Kind

Paper art is a lot of fun. It looks so good when you have finished a neat little project and people think you are so clever – little do they know that it can be a very simple and cost effective matter to make 3-d paper craft and other off the page projects.

Often a completed project only needs a person to take a basic shape and make lots of them from scrap paper. You may like to make a special paper art item to decorate your home or to serve as a decoration for a special event.

For example, I made a topiary tree with circle shapes. Here’s what I did:

  • Step 1. First I decided on a color palette for my tree. I had a lot of blue and green scraps of card stock and designer paper in a folder as I can never make myself throw paper scraps away, and surprise surprise – those color hues also went nicely with my home decor. You could of course choose any other color combination that suited your decor or party theme. (I have always thought what pretty wedding table decorations these trees could make
